 Being a Responsible Traveler

There are many things you can do before, during and after your trip to help the environment. All it takes is a little planning.  Plus, the things you learn can carry over into your everday life.

 Before You Leave

Trip Planning:

1. Verify the 'green' claims of the hotel.  Green Hotel Bookings ensures you can find certified hotels near your destination.

2. Choose the smallest vehicle that can comfortably accommodate you when renting a car. They may offer free upgrades to a larger size, but you'll use more gas.

3. Rent a hybrid car.

4. Pay with a Green Credit Card. Find a credit card that will donate a portion of your purchase to a environment cause. Many major banks, including BofA and Chase have green credit card programs.

5. Travel light - no matter if you travel by air, car or train, each pound of extra baggage uses fuel to transport it.  Still plan carefully, but instead of packing extra items 'just in case', take only what you need for your trip.

On Route:

1. Go easy on the gas pedal.  Whether you're driving you own car or renting, drive responsibly.  Think ahead so you don't have to step on the gas.

2. Don't overfill.  The gas pumps have an automatic shutoff for a reason.  It's not worth it to try and get that last couple of ounces in your tank, only to have it spill over.

 Sightseeing

1. Use public transportation
instead driving your rental or taking a taxi. Even better, walk or bike. Besides saving energy, you might be amazed at some of the local sights you might have missed while driving.

2. Do not Disturb. So it will be as beautiful for the next visitors, take nothing with you. Have your camera ready to take those scenic views or that special event.  But leave the area as pristine as possible.

3. Stay on marked trails. They are marked for a reason.  By staying on trails you preserve the wilderness. Make sure you have a small trash bag with you or deposit your trash in marked receptacles.

4. If you scuba or snorkel, don't disturb the environment below the water.

5. Be a cautious camper. Make sure you make your campfire in approved areas and extinguish it completely before you leave.

6. Buy local products. Not only will you support the local economy, but you will reduce the impact from goods shipped in from other areas.

 At Your Destination

1. Turn off everything as you leave your room.  Besides turning off the lignts, television, or any other electric devices, turn off the heater or airconditioner.  You may be a little uncomfortable when you return to your room, but it's only temporary.

2. Save water.  Turn off the water while you're brushing your teeth.  If you don't turn off the water while you soap up, at least keep the shower short.

3. Reuse your towels and sheets. You don't change them everday when you are home, so why do it on the road? Many hotels have a card explaining their towel policy.  Just hang up the towels to dry and use them the next day.
