Trip Planning:
1. Verify the 'green' claims of the hotel. Green Hotel Bookings ensures you can find certified hotels near your destination.
2. Choose the smallest vehicle that can comfortably accommodate you when renting a car. They may offer free upgrades to a larger size, but you'll use more gas.
3. Rent a hybrid car.
4. Pay with a Green Credit Card. Find a credit card that will donate a portion of your purchase to a environment cause. Many major banks, including BofA and Chase have green credit card programs.
5. Travel light - no matter if you travel by air, car or train, each pound of extra baggage uses fuel to transport it. Still plan carefully, but instead of packing extra items 'just in case', take only what you need for your trip.
On Route:
1. Go easy on the gas pedal. Whether you're driving you own car or renting, drive responsibly. Think ahead so you don't have to step on the gas.
2. Don't overfill. The gas pumps have an automatic shutoff for a reason. It's not worth it to try and get that last couple of ounces in your tank, only to have it spill over.
